MR. A +

Boat Type: Offshore 62
Owner: John Alioto
Yacht Club: San Diego YC
Built: 2003

Favorite Cruising Destination
We love to go to Catalina as much as possible. It relaxing and lots to do. Another favorite place is La Playa basin next to the SDYC, just a few hundred yards from our slip.

Favorite Boating Experince
We have many favorite boating experiences mostly with our family, grandkids and close friends. Most are in La Playa but the best are at Catalina. A few years ago we went to Buffalo Beach with our daughter Melissa and her husband Scott and their two boys and some very close friends. Most recent was taking our new boat on its maiden voyage to Catalina with my son Greg and his three kids. My wife Laura and Greg’s wife Devon came over on the ferry and joined us for 6 days. Knowing the whole family  loves boating opens up a lot of opportunities for fun and water oriented experiences for everyone.

About the Crew

What’s in a Name
I named our first boat Mr. A because when I was in trouble around the house my wife called me Mr. A, as in “you better straighten up”. I said it was because I was an angel. She also says it because I am a type “A” personality and compulsive about keeping our boat clean and in great shape. When we bought our present boat this past year our grandkids wanted to keep the original name of Mr. A but wanted to add a “+” sign because they said we have more grandkids and we will have more fun, hence the name “Mr. A +”.

Reason to Buy This Boat
I wanted an Offshore 58 /62 since 1996 but could only afford being a partner in a sail boat. When my wife decided she did not like sailing anymore we sold our interest in the sail boat and bought a 48 ft Offshore in 2003. I always liked the lines and profile on this boat and loved the classic teak interior. Since our two children were married the family has grown with the addition of six grandkids so it was a good excuse to finally get my dream boat this past January 2017. Happy to report my wife and whole family and friends really enjoy this boat.

Interest in CUBAR
I have always wanted to go to the Sea of Cortez and doing it with the CUBAR offers the safety and support to make it happen plus you get to meet a lot of very nice people who share the fun and enjoyment of boating.

Boating Story
I recently helped a good friend bring his Michelson 62 ft.  Nomad Long Range Cruiser from La Paz to San Diego. We left La Paz and never stopped at a dock or anchored, except for fishing, until we got to the Shelter Island Customs dock. We went 7/24 for 5 days. It was my first time to do any long range boating and it helped me get some experience for the upcoming CUBAR trip.
