Captain/Owner Bio
Deb & Jim purchased BurntSand directly from PAE in 2002. Since then they have travelled over 25,000 nm with her, covering the west coast from Juneau, AK to Zihuatenejo, MX a number of times. They participated in FUBAR 2009 and had a wonderful time with two other couples on board. This will be their third trip to Mexico and plan to leave BurntSand over the summer of 2018 on the Mexican west coast.

Favorite Cruising Destination
We have a hard time choosing any one destination as just spending extended time on the BurntSand is a great experience. Having said that, our two trips to South East Alaska, three trips to Haida Gwai and four cruises down the west coast of Vancouver Island were all memorable, plus of course the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

Favorite Boating Experience
We have been lucky to have many fantastic boating experiences on our own, plus, meeting many wonderful people on the way! Travelling a less travelled route from Craig, Alaska to the Haida Gwaii Islands in Northwest BC led to some amazing experiences throughout.

About the Crew

Clark Gallon: Clark lives in Vancouver BC and has been an active sailor for 35 yrs. In 2010 he went over to the dark side and currently cruises on a Nordhavn 62 . Longest offshore voyage has been to Hawaii in the Vic-Maui race along with fellow crew member Les Landes.

Les Landes:  Les has been sailing and power boating since his late teen years. He circumnavigated Lake Ontario several times and crewed on the world’s oldest tall ship. Les skippered a charter boat in the Caribbean and a sail boat on the Vic-Maui race. He has spent over thirty years under sail and power cruising in the Pacific Northwest. He crewed on a boat on the 2009 FUBAR. He is a member of The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) and the Royal Canadian Marine Search And Rescue (RCM-SAR).

Peter J Bonner: Over the past 50 years Peter has extensive cruising on both sail and power vessels between 25-60 ft throughout the Pacific Northwest from Puget Sound to the Queen Charlotte Islands. Frequent trips (30-40) to the west coast of Vancouver Island whichinvolves open water coastal cruising. He also has several trips cruising Pacific Coast of Mexico including 2009 FUBAR on the MY Burntsand

What’s in a Name
The CEO of Silicon Graphics gave a speech in the mid 90’s stating that “Silicon was just burnt sand anyway”, so, Jim had started a computer consulting company and ultimately it was named BurntSand, and, the Nordhavn 57 took on this name.

Reason to Buy This Boat
When we made our decision in 2000 we were looking for a coastal cruising boat that would be safe, reliable and backed up by a reputable company – the Nordhavn 57 has been the right boat for us.

Interest in CUBAR
The San Diego Yacht Club organized, and, we participated in FUBAR 2009. We had an amazing adventure and were very impressed with the professional organization of the entire event. Our great experience motivated us to sign up again!
